Set on England’s most easterly inhabited island, this property had to be treated with some real respect. An early 20th century chalet style property perched above the estuary with views to die for, we had to get it right!
‘What finally clinched it for me was Joe’s solution for the bay window,’
says the owner,
‘We originally had 9 panes per bay with some beautiful leaded lights and there was no way to replace like with like without reducing the view with too many mullions.’
Windows Etc suggested reducing the panes to seven to maintain the charm and symmetry whilst maximising the available light. To take it one step further, we painstakingly copied the original leaded light and matched the colours and pattern precisely to retain the old building’s character. we even made sure there were monkey tail handles to give it that extra attention to detail.
To the newly extended rear of the property, no light has been excluded. A five leaf stretch of aluminium bifold doors across the back, and even some specially made half glazed bifolds in the garage, open up the spaces to the sea air and the garden. The main rear bedroom is crowned with a juliette balcony and the upstairs bathroom has a mini roof lantern to flood in the southern sunlight.
Keeping with tradition, the utility room access has a stable composite door and all the windows throughout the property are matched in the highly durable dark grey aluminium.
