Keeping in Character
A traditional home project using PVC windows
Nestled in one of England’s most beautiful stretches of countryside we find this property. Although the owners have been resident here for a comparatively short time, they have known the house through friends of the family for some time; they felt it needed treating with respect.
The property is styled much within the traditional Essex/Suffolk rural paradigm, sporting soft red bricks, clay peg tiles and smooth render. The windows need to tie-in well. The choice of PVC stormproof windows was a good one. With high energy efficiency ratings, Stormproof PVC windows can help to reduce the cost of household bills. As the name suggests, Stormproof PVC Windows are extremely durable and weather resistant and can keep out the country winds and draughts.
This is not a triumph of substance over style however; the profiles are traditional, the timber-effect is subtle and well executed and the monkey-tail handles truly round off the effect of a traditional English country home. All the benefits of modern approaches coupled with classic looks.
A testimony to the attention to detail, we used a deep cill detail called ‘The Radlington’. Old imperial bricks varied in height, metric bricks are 65mm. Old timber cills were deep and often aligned with a course of bricks. The Radlington is a modern interpretation of timber cills and allows for packing, expansion, Baypole jacks and irregular mortar. So if you are replacing traditional timber windows, installation becomes easier and the end result more authentic.
