"We are so pleased with our replacement french doors. This is now the fourth time we have used Windows Etc and as ever are really pleased with the result. Thanks to everyone who helped us get exactly what we wanted but a special thanks go to Luke and Jack for their no fuss no mess installation."
French doors, opening from the middle.
A pair of glazed doors that open from the centre, onto the garden or onto a Juliet balcony upstairs. We supply and fit them in uPVC, aluminium and timber across Essex and Suffolk.
Two doors, the full width of the opening.
French doors are a pair of glazed doors, hinged at the sides, that meet in the middle. Open both and you have the whole width of the opening, with nothing in the way.
Fixed glazed panels either side make the glass wider without making the doors any bigger. In a narrower opening, they're worth comparing with bifold and sliding doors.

Downstairs to the garden, upstairs to a Juliet balcony.
Most French doors open outwards, so the doors fold back against the wall and the room stays clear. They can also open inwards, which is how they work upstairs behind a Juliet balcony.
In a barn conversion in Felsted we fitted black aluminium French doors that open inwards behind a glass Juliet balcony, so the bedroom opens straight onto the view.

What our customers say
"Excellent front door and top light installation by Lee and Leo today. New front door looks a treat. A real professional service from quoting to survey and installation."
"Ordered black framed uPVC windows and French doors for a summer house project. Provided the best price of 8 companies approached and they were nice people to deal with. Very happy with the fit, finish and quality."
French, bifold or sliding?
French doors give you the full width of the opening with just two doors to open. Bifolds fold right back across a wider opening, and sliding doors give you the biggest panes, with nothing swinging into the room.
Our guide to bifold doors vs sliding doors goes through those two, and you can compare the doors at our showroom at 38 Heckworth Close, Colchester.

01206 85 10 10Do I need planning permission for French doors?
Usually not, if they replace doors or windows in an existing opening and look similar to what the house was built with. A new or widened opening, a listed home, or a conservation area can be different, so check with your council's planning team first.
Can French doors open inwards?
Yes. Most open outwards, but inward opening French doors are how a Juliet balcony works upstairs: the doors open into the room and the balcony stays fixed outside.
Can I have blinds between the glass?
Yes. Morley integral blinds are sealed inside the glazed unit, so they stay clean and can't be damaged.
What colours can I have?
Aluminium is powder coated, so almost any colour is possible. uPVC comes in white, greys and woodgrain finishes, and timber can be painted. Come and see the finishes at our showroom.
