Ipswich Borough has 15 conservation areas. They include Central and the Wet Dock, Christchurch Street, Henley Road, Norwich Road and Anglesea Road, Park, St Helen’s and Stoke — and the Parks area on the north and east sides holds some of the town’s best 19th-century middle-class housing, much of it now inside one of those boundaries.
Wooden windows are the expectation on a good deal of that housing. What catches people out is not the choice of material but the permission.
Article 4 is the part people miss
Some of these areas are covered by an Article 4 Direction. That adds planning controls to individual houses, so a window change that would need no permission elsewhere in Ipswich may need an application here. Because those controls land on individual houses, a neighbour’s experience is not evidence of where yours stands — Ipswich Borough Council’s planning team is, and that is the first useful phone call.
Two things follow from the answer. An application usually turns on evidence of what is already there, so photographing the existing windows — how they open, how the glazing is divided, how deep they sit — is worth doing before anything comes out. And an application takes weeks, so the order should follow the decision rather than run alongside it.
Which elevation is actually controlled
Controls generally bite hardest on what can be seen from the street, so the front of a house and its rear can end up being two different jobs with two different answers. On a corner plot, both flank and front may count. Establishing that early stops a whole-house quote being drawn up as though every opening carried the same constraint.
To see how modern wooden windows are actually made, Bereco’s windows for character homes is a reasonable place to start.
Coming out to see it
Ipswich is about 25 to 30 minutes from our Colchester showroom along the A12. We would rather see the windows than work from your measurements here, because in a controlled area the survey is also the record of what is being replaced.
Our timber windows page sets out what we supply. If you have already spoken to the council, tell us what they said when you ask for an estimate and we will work to it.
