Rear extensions in Springfield, Great Baddow and Broomfield
The pattern is familiar across Chelmsford’s family housing: a kitchen or dining room facing a decent garden through a door and a window that were never designed to work together. Springfield has Victorian terraces near the centre and later streets behind them; Great Baddow and Broomfield have a large share of twentieth-century family homes. All three throw up the same brief — open the back of the house without rebuilding it.
Replacing a door and window with one run of glass changes how a room is used far more than its size suggests.
Panels, stacking and the threshold
The question is not whether bifolds suit the house but how many panels the opening can carry and which way they should stack. A three-panel set folding left behaves very differently from a four-panel split, and the answer comes from where the table sits and which side the path runs. Decide early whether you want a traffic door, so the set works as a normal back door on a wet Tuesday without folding anything. Our guide to choosing a bifold layout goes through the configurations we fit most often.
The threshold is the other early decision. A low track reads better and is kinder to push a buggy over; a weathered upstand sheds water more reliably on an exposed elevation. If the garden sits lower than the floor inside, that step is worth settling on site too, because it changes both the threshold detail and how the doors are approached from outside.
Work we have done nearby
At House of pane in Felsted we fitted Smarts bifolds alongside Heritage 47 aluminium windows and a Spitfire front door on a barn conversion, and at Kelvedon we replaced an old-style uPVC conservatory with Smarts aluminium bifolds and a roof lantern.
Getting to you
Chelmsford is about 35 to 40 minutes from our Colchester showroom along the A12. For bifolds the survey is less about the glass than the opening: the structural span, whether a new lintel is needed, how level the floor is across the threshold, and where the doors sit fully stacked.
See the range on our bifold doors page, or get an estimate before anyone visits.
